Sealants and Construction

Joint sealants are a critical part of any building. While they represent only a small portion of the total construction budget, failed joint sealants are responsible for water intrusion and related damage that results in millions of dollars of litigation each year. Having an understanding of the performance characteristics of sealants and the ability to identify and understand sealant failures and deficiencies is important.

This presentation outlines the various types of joint sealant failures and discusses methods for avoiding or correcting these failures. The performance characteristics various types of sealant will be explored in the context of real-life projects. An overview of aesthetic and design issues will also be included.

As a master craftsman, project manager and educator, Wayne has been working within the sealant and waterproofing industry for over 30 years in the Pacific North West. Having worked with United Professional Caulking & Restoration since 1991, with over $60 million dollars in successfully completed commercial contract work without construction defect, claim or issue, and has maintained a dedicated union work force to ensure quality, performance, and dependability. Specializing in building façade sealant detailing, Wayne currently works with general contractors, architects, consultants, and local unions in the training and education of good sealant practices and curriculum for apprenticeship training.

This presentation has been approved for 1 hour of AIA continuing education credits.
