Passive House and Multi-Family, a Natural Match?

Myths Contemplated, Deliverables Characterized, the Future Considered

This presentation will address how Passive House design is realized in larger scale multifamily buildings with a specific focus on changes required in planning, design and construction to meet Passive House certification requirements.  We will investigate whether the scale of larger buildings can lead to high-performance results that are closer at hand than expected.  What is taking place in markets that have already embarked on scaling up Passive House construction and what does the path forward in our region look like?  Is there a path to all electric buildings at scale that operate at energy levels reflected in our city, state and global climate responsive targets?

Dan Whitmore with RDH Building Science Inc. was one of the first Certified Passive House Consultants in the United States. He enjoys delving into the minutiae of energy conservation and then translating that information into built reality. From this focus, he has participated in the design and construction of numerous groundbreaking projects across the US. Dan combines a passion for energy, sustainability, and the natural environment with over 30 years of construction experience. He melds knowledge of Passive House, building science, materials selection, and energy resources with his extensive background in hands-on craft, site management, and project troubleshooting.

Joe Giampietro is a principal at JGA Consultants. With more than 35 years of experience in real estate development, land use planning and architecture, Joe provides high performance design strategies to reduce energy use, increase durability and comfort, and lower maintenance costs. Joe’s passion for designing high-performance, low-energy buildings led him to develop one of Seattle’s first Passive House projects, the Mini-B Passive House Backyard Cottage, as a demonstration project.  While a principal at NK Architects he led the design team for Pax Futura in Columbia City, the first multifamily Passive House project in King County completed and occupied in 2018. Joe is a founding member of Passive House Northwest and collaborates with the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild on the ShiftBuilding Symposium series.
