Brutal Honesty - Architectural Exposed Concrete in the PNW

Concrete is a unique enclosure material – it can be both architectural and structural at the same time. It can be finished in a variety of refined textures, or left in as-found condition. It can also be made reasonably watertight yet also be prone to leaking.

Architectural exposed concrete is a challenging material to work with, especially in the Pacific Northwest. Our weather soaks it and stains it, and our ground moves it and shakes it –presenting risks and challenges to be accounted for during design.

During this presentation, Brad Carmichael, PE, Assoc. AIA, CPHC® of 4EA Building Sciences will discuss strategies and approaches for designing with architecturally exposed concrete – both precast and cast-in-place – in our region. This will include considerations related to durability, weather exposure, water control, condensation, thermal bridging, and carbon footprint.

Brad has been consulting on building enclosures throughout North America for over 15 years on complex new construction and rehabilitation projects. He is passionate about good design and the role it can play in social and environmental stewardship. He believes that durable and efficient building enclosures are critical for a built environment that is low consumption and long-lasting.
