Teresa Moroseos, from the University of Washington Integrated Design Lab (UW IDL), will share the research progress on the development of the parametric tool that can be used to evaluate embodied and operational carbon in early design. This project was funded in part by the SeaBEC 2020 Research Grant. The UW IDL, in partnership with faculty from the UW Department of Architecture, developed the tool for use in a UW graduate research studio in the spring of 2021. The tool was developed using a visual programming language to run iterative simulations through EnergyPlus and custom Python scripts that calculate operational and embodied carbon for early-stage building designs. The tool allows parametric input for various building parameters including window-to-wall ratio, wall assembly, window assembly, exterior shading, and simple massing. Teresa will share the process for developing the tool, current tool capabilities, integration of the tool into the UW studio class, and the the next steps for the project.
