Moisture Management and Remediation in Wood-Framed Construction

Come and join First Onsite and Exxel Pacific for a dynamic discussion focused on moisture management strategies in commercial wood-framed buildings. Multiple presenters will partake in the discussion including Matt Vanderveen, Will Cappuccino, Steve Morgan, and Chris Thayne. The presentation will cover recommended methods for drying out wood-framed buildings, how to manage cold air from negatively affecting interior finishes in the Fall and Winter months and effective organic growth prevention strategies during and after construction.

Attendees will gain insights into temp weather protection, mitigating moisture risks, controlling evaporative loads, and actions steps if organic growth is found. The session will highlight best practices from restoration professionals and general contractors to ensure building envelope integrity and long-term durability.

Whether you're a builder, architect, restoration expert, or project manager, this session offers practical tools and field-tested knowledge to improve outcomes and reduce risk on wood-framed projects.

Matt Vanderveen bio:
 Matt joined Exxel Pacific in 2007 and manages the company’s Quality Control Program.During preconstruction, he works collaboratively with the design team during product selection, detail review, product compatibility, and performs extensive envelope and waterproofing design detail review and redlining. Matt has 20 years of experience in the building envelope field and works closely with team members to analyze new and existing buildings for constructability, issue resolution, and cost efficiency. Matt promotes construction mock-ups and a close review of first installation workmanship so crews build it right the first time and a do the right thing even when no one is looking. During construction, Matt supports program managers and collaborates with the on-site office and field teams on submittal reviews, complex issue resolution and best practices, and value-added strategies that will positively impact the project.

Chris Thayne bio:
 Chris’ primary role at Exxel Pacific is to ensure project teams successfully implement and follow the Building Envelope Program in consideration of safety, schedule, budget, and quality while maintaining strong working relationships with teammates, designers, consultants, and subcontractors. Additionally, he performs redline review of projects and participate in preconstruction meetings when needed, providing input on best practices for constructability and products. During the concrete and framing stages, Chris will review project schedule and identify tasks and sequencing that are critical to exterior completion based on product type. Chris has been in the construction industry since 1997 and with Exxel Pacific since 2017. He started out in the industry as a commercial roofing installer, commercial exterior siding and metal installer.

Will Cappuccino Bio:

 Based out of the First Onsite Seattle North branch, William Cappuccino has been dedicated to the property restoration industry since 2008, bringing over 17 years of experience and technical expertise to every project. As a Project Manager and Estimator, William oversees complex restoration projects from initial assessment through completion — ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and total client satisfaction. 
William specializes in health care restoration work, managing projects in critical and regulated environments such as hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. His ASHE, ICRA 2.0, AHERA, CCHR-E, MRT, and EPA Renovator Refresher certifications reflect a deep commitment to safety, infection control, and environmental compliance in every project he leads. 
Recognized for his leadership and technical knowledge, William collaborates with facility managers, infection control and environmental health professionals, and insurance partners to deliver compliant, high-quality restoration solutions that minimize disruption to essential health care operations across the Greater Seattle region. 

Steve Morgan Bio:

 A native of Seattle, with 35 years of experience in the construction and restoration industry, Steve is the General Manager of the Seattle – North branch of First Onsite and oversees all field production work, scheduling, technician training, inspections, proposals and invoices. 
Steve holds multiple certifications to serve the water damage restoration and mold remediation marketplace. He frequently speaks at training events and industry seminars. 
His expertise in drying complex structures and materials is nationally recognized. He and his crews provide field R&D for specialized drying equipment manufacturers.
